Safety course


This 5 day course, approved by the commissioner for Occupational Safety and Health, provides elected Safety and Health Representatives with the skills and knowledge to perform their duties under Western Australian legislation.

This course is suitable for elected Safety Health Representatives from both the mining and general industry workplaces.

Relevant supervisors, managers, and members of Safety Health Committees, are also invited to attend the course to gain a general understanding of the legislation and the role of Safety Health Representatives. On completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of legislation in the role of a Health and Safety Representative
  • Identify and locate supporting information from a variety of sources
  • Describe the functions, make up and roles of a Health and Safety Committee
  • Risk management – Identify and evaluate hazards in the workplace and recommend control methods
  • Conduct inspections of the workplace
  • Conduct investigations into workplace illness/ injuries and accidents
  • Communicate and consult on Health and Safety matters and represent employees
  • Resolve conflict and issue Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) when appropriate

WA Skills Training also offers a 2 day refresher course (post introductory training course) for Safety and Health Representatives. On completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand recent legislative changes, and how they apply in the workplace
  • Reinforce their knowledge of legislation and their roles as a Safety and Health Representative
  • Access hazard information and apply realistic controls to the workplace
  • Research and present an informative short safety topic talk
  • Identify barriers to effective performance of the role and function of the Safety and Health Representative and suggest processes for overcoming the barriers
  • Students must be a minimum of 18 years of age as per WA Skills Training policy
  • Students who may require additional support are encouraged to inform WA Skills Training staff prior to commencing the course
  • Must be an elected Safety and Health Representative, or relevant Supervisor/Manager or Safety Committee Member
  • 5 day course for newly elected Safety and Health Representatives
  • 2 day course refresher (post introductory training course)

Both the 5 and 2 day courses are face-to-face, focusing on interactive activities. These can be delivered in the Welshpool and Bunbury Training Centres and the client’s workplace by arrangement.

WA Skills Training encourages participation from a broad range of participants; including special needs groups.Our course and supporting activities are structured to ensure all participants can participate and contribute.

  • This course is a participation course, and is not formally assessed
  • Course progress is evaluated through interactive class activities
  • Recognition of current competency – ask us how you could be formally assessed in order to use these modules towards a Certificate III in Work Health and Safety

At successful completion of this course you will be issued with a Statement of Completion for Safety and Health Representatives (SHR)
