Online Refresher Course
MSMWHS217 - Gas test atmospheres

Introduction

** Nationally Recognised Online Refresher **

Our online refresher process is designed for workers who want to refresh a unit of competency (tickets) via a blended pathway of practical evidence and an online assessment saving the need to sit in a class for a whole day.

This course is for anyone who will be testing atmospheres in the workplace. This can be inside warehouses where machinery is being used, in an underground mine, landfills, open pits, contaminated soils, while using welding equipment, or in a wine cellar. Gas testing is critical for most industries, including construction and mining, to ensure that the atmosphere you are working in is safe and the air is breathable and safe to work in. Atmospheric contamination may be caused by gas emissions, leaks, fumes/vapours/sprays, use of chemicals, or waste throughout production. Atmospheric testing is used to read conditions in the air that may incapacitate or injure a person, or even lead to illness or death if the atmosphere is toxic. This course will cover the following aspects:

Prepare for gas testing | What do you need to know before you can test an atmosphere for gas? What equipment is required?
Test gas | How do you test the atmosphere for gas? How do you read the gas detection equipment? How do you monitor changes to gas in an atmosphere while working?
Maintain equipment | How is the equipment required to be stored? How do you service and maintain the equipment?

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work.

It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation. Working environment may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. Workplace atmospheres may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.
